There are those who would say that it couldn’t/wouldn’t happen because we don’t have the same access or attitude to guns, but anyone, who was of an age to listen to the news at the time, will still be haunted by the reports of the massacre of even younger children at Dunblane. Of course it can happen here! Our schools and universities have little or no security; most of them don’t even have a token security guard to protect our children. A situation on the scale of Virginia Tech is shocking, but it’s a lesson to all educational establishments. It ought to be a wake-up call for all of the officials concerned with public safety to check the security policies of each educational institution to ensure that at the very least there are measures in place to try and prevent a copycat occurrence here. If those measures are taken, but never needed, that’s great. If they are needed, and aren’t in place, shame on the officials who were naïve enough to think it could never happen here!
