Community Spirit Please Come Back!

I remember being a child and having really nice next-door neighbour’s. Those were the days. The only boring thing about the ones on the left were that Mr Humpkins used to always go on and on about recycling and how important it was. It used to make me and my brother laugh. What did adults know anyway? Nothing! Why should I listen to an old man with too much time on his hands when nothing he suggested seemed to make any difference at all?

Fast forward a few years and I am seeing things from Mr Humpkins'(never did know his first name) perspective. Now we have neighbour’s who don’t give a damn about recycling, and that really gets my goat.

They are not unique, of course. Not everyone does care about recycling, and if you ask me that’s the source of the problem. With a lack of community spirit in many places the idea of recycling – and the message behind it – has somehow gotten lost along the way.

This post is all about that kind of stuff. Read it and see for yourself.

One of the things it talks about is turning off lights and all the other simple little things you can do that really do make a difference. I’m not suggesting that the ozone layer would be mended overnight if we all did this right away, but I am suggesting that it’s a very good starting point. Small steps first, and who knows, it might lead on to bigger and better energy saving things.
