The integration of movie and the video game

I can’t decide if the movie and the video game should team up together and take on the world or not. On the one side I think this:

  1. Avatar was amazing. I loved the depth they created, and the stunning way they made it seem both real and also magical, like in a game.

  2. I loved Beowulf and the motion-capture photography – that film set a precedent as far as I am concerned.

  3. Combining the two enables so much more freedom which conventional movies can’t possibly create.

But there again my old-fashioned mind says this:

  1. There’s a reason why Arbolago Homes for Sale are just that – just homes. They have what they have and that’s what you expect. The same with movies. When I watch a movie I expect to see acting and the like – too many effects ruin the whole thing.

  2. Like I said, acting is paramount: the effects mean that sometimes the facial expressions get lost, which can really ruin a film.

  3. Video games have their place, as do movies. Combining the two is a mistake that will eventually take movies in the wrong direction.

But there again, we’re only at the beginning of this partnership, aren’t we? So perhaps it’d be wrong to speculate now on what might happen in the next ten years or more? And if we stopped now we’d never get to see what potential there is, would we? In fact, movie making progress might actually regress until we all start watching black and white films again…that’d definitely be a mistake if you ask me.
