The Diabolical Diabetes & Driving Proposal

Well as if my health concerns weren’t bad enough, I’ve just read about the proposal that insulin controlled diabetics have to report their condition to the DVLC because they may suffer an attack while driving. How crazy is this? The news report assures readers that this isn’t actually backed up by statistics whilst at the same reporting that the proposal also considers that people who are newly diagnosed with diabetes requiring insulin to keep it under control don’t drive at all. Now I agree that we have a lot of drivers on the road who must have paid a huge amount of money to receive their driving license because their skill on the road is so appalling (not to mention being a danger to other drivers), but that’s stupidity, ego, bad time management and perhaps one tipple too much at lunch. It’s not diabetes!

Diabetics know that they have to keep their blood sugar right. We’re not stupid. We read the information, check our blood sugar, eat the way we’re supposed to. If anything, becasue we know the risk we actually take good care to ensure that we are alright because we are more aware of the risk. I went dating in London last week, and I didn’t drive because I knew I’d be drinking even though I really wanted to try and use my car to impress the girl. I certainly made sure I eat right during dinner. Long before a diabetic is a road risk they will get a warning sign in the shape of a huge headache and they’ll pull off the road to eat. They are no more a safety hazard than someone who is prone to migraine, or even someone going to the doctor’s for flu medication.

At first reading, I suspect many people are going to switch off mentally because they aren’t diabetic, but people really need to get sharp about these health proposals. What happens to diabetics this month might be happening to those with other health issues next month. Whilst this may be great news for the environment because it will eventually mean that there are so many people who aren’t allowed to drive, it’s going to have a huge impact on public transportation which is going to have to improve by about 500% in order to come anything close to what would be needed, and it’s going to have a huge financial impact in terms of car sales, petrol sales, employment in the car industry, employment demographics as people who have these conditions are forced to find other jobs on the public transportation grid, and so on. Perhaps it does sound an exaggerated view of a hypothetic situation, but every situation starts somewhere – and if the insulin controlled diabetics are not allowed to drive, then that would be the start of the situation, so this is something that everyone needs to be watching.

On a side note there are many drivers on the road who have been drinking alcohol. Doesn’t it seem unfair to place a complete ban on people who aren’t responsible for their health issues and are doing what they can to maintain a “normal” life, whilst those who choose to do something that they know can potentially impair their road judgement are allowed to do so as long as it’s within the legal limit? That seems crazy to me. I know that I wouldn’t want to have to go through cosmetic surgery on my face following a brutal accident to make me look normal again, and I would be happy to upset a few people to ensure this. Making driving illegal to anyone who has had alcohol would seem a much better way of cutting down the road accidents – a no tolerance approach to alcohol drinking then driving might be unpopular but I’m pretty sure that the statistics would support its introduction, unlike the ones about diabetic drivers.

There are reportedly many diabetics who are undiagnosed. In many healthcare practices there are charts on the walls telling people if they have the following symptoms they should ask for a diabetes test. How many people are going to ask if they know they run the risk of losing not only their freedom to eat and drinking whatever they choose, but also their driving license? That’s what I thought!

Shannon, Madeleine and Missing Kids

With two small children I watch the continuing saga of the ongoing treasure hunts for these two girls in horror. In one corner a little girl left alone at night in a foreign hotel room with two baby siblings goes missing and despite a huge worldwide media campaign, she remains lost to her parents who have themselves been suspected of involvement. In the other corner, a slightly older missing girl is found but then a number of relatives – including the mother who reported her missing – are being questioned about their involvement in the case. Child abductions aren’t new, but the way parents and media can get information out to the public and ask for help is far improved on what it used to be. In real life you can't have give the victim a face lift that makes them unrecognisable, so there is a chance they will be found. Unfortunately cases like these two young girls are more likely to create a certain apathy towards future missing kids simply because of the police involving the parents in such a negative way. Although Madeleine’s parents have been cleared of involvement (although the friends they dined with that evening are still to undergo further questioning), Shannon’s mother has been remanded thus implying that she was in some way responsible for what happened to her daughter. I confess to being somewhat confused to what’s going on in this particular case – Madeleine’s is far more straightforward, although sadder because of her continued disappearance.

What troubles me however is that if something were to happen to a child of mine, would the media turn its attention from helping me to find my child, or would it use the Shannon case as an opportunity to run our family through the mud? Would the public rise to the challenge of finding our child, or would they shrug and say “Remember that Shannon case; it’s probably the parents behind this one too.”

Too often we get desensitized to things because of excessive media attention, things like changing your gender, breast enlargements and anorexia have become normal. I fear that this will happen in the case of missing children because of the way the McCann’s have flooded the media with Madeleine’s story, and the way that the family seems to be involved with the Shannon story. I don’t blame the McCann’s – if it were my little girl I’d be doing my best to make sure that the world knew what she looked like and constantly doing what I could to keep her in the media’s eye too – but I am a little worried that the public will stop caring and begin to think “Oh another child missing. What a terrible world.” And then forget all about it. If the public don’t care, the media will stop the anxious update reports, and then all the technology in the world won’t help find these children because there’ll be no-one looking.

First Direct Employs Self First Tactics

Anyone seeking a mortgage with First Direct is going to find themselves with an automatic disqualification unless they are already First Direct customers according to the announcement made from the bank. In financial theory terms perhaps this is a sound move – especially in the wake of the Northern Rock fiasco. But what about people who are looking for a mortgage? Banks are often like sheep, where one leads another quickly follows. Does that mean that there will soon be a situation (temporary or otherwise) where anyone wishing to buy a house will be hostage to whatever interest rates their own bank offers with no free market in which to search for a better deal? And what kind of president does that set for other times of borrowing? If I wanted a cosmetic surgery loan, would I too have to only use the people that I bank with? First Direct may have good reason to protect their assets in this way but I hope that the matter is being closely monitored by the major UK financial watchdogs to ensure that the ordinary people on the street are protected from any institution wishing to use the situation as a way to increase their profit margins.

Tips for Surviving the “No Frills” Airline Experience

“No Frills” may mean less ticket price, but it can be heavy on stress unless you know what to expect a little bit in advance. Here are a few tips from recent experience:

1. If you are travelling with children pay the additional cost for priority boarding. It’s not worth the worry of standing at the back of a large line of passengers wondering if you and your little ones are going to find the right number of seats to be seated together. Whinge and complain about paying this cost by all means, but pay it. If your plane is full it’s well worth the peace of mind.

2. Having paid for priority boarding, find the priority boarding queue and stand in it as soon as you get to your gate. You may be standing there for 40 minutes but at least you know that you’re guaranteed a good choice of seats once you’ve boarded the plane. Choosing seats around the middle of the plane will allow you a few minutes to get our children seated before other passengers start pushing past you.

3. Weigh your luggage if possible before arriving at the airport. Not only will it cost you in money if you’re over your allocated allowance, but you’ll also have to stand in another queue to pay the excess and then queue to check-in again. If you know it’s over weight beforehand you have the choice of ditching some stuff, or going straight to excess baggage and paying before your check-in desk opens! Please note, excess baggage has become very expensive. You are better off leaving your laser hair removal system at home, becaue it'll be cheaper to just buy another one when you arrive than take it with you.

4. Remember to ditch all drinks before going through security into the departure area. You can buy more once you get through there.

5. Go through to the departure lounge as soon as you are allowed to do so – especially if you have young children. This will give you enough time to clear security (including the removal of jackets/shoes and putting them back on), and also time to make a bathroom visit.

6. Food on the plane will be available but it will be limited in choice – especially if you are travelling later in the day. Pay a visit to a store in the departure lounge and buy any refreshments you think you’d like on board the plane. The vending machines in the launge may be expensive, but it will most likely to cheaper than buying what’s offered by your airline, and a good deal tastier!

Although the above is not an exhaustive list of things you can do to make your “no frills” flight hassle free, by following the tips above, you’ll be able to cut out some of the frustrations that first time “no frills” passengers endure.

Motorway Service Stations – Sanity Savers for Families!

I’ve always considered those large service stations along the UK’s motorways to be the playground of the higher income brackets. Places to be visited by those who are either in search of emergency bathroom facilities, or have time and money to throw away on “local produce” and speciality breads. Travelling by car with two small children from one end of the UK to the other however has completely changed my opinion however.

OK, so I stand by the fact that mostly the service stations are going to cost you money, the chocolate bars are almost double in price and the vending machines are more than a bag of fresh coffee from Italy. What you have to balance that against is what you get for that money. For example, the stress level of trying to navigate a car of increasingly bored children through yet another lengthy road works tailback can become of monumental proportions if it’s not diffused. This is where the service stations come into their own as a bright beacon for parents on the motorways.

It doesn’t have to be a lengthy stop. You don't have to go in and have IPL treatment at the latest in a line of promotional stands to grace the stations forecourt. We found that even a 15 minute stop for ice cream was enough to restore good humour and harmony in our vehicle which lasted a good 70-80 miles until the sniping began again and it was time to look for another service station. Over the course of the 600 miles we covered in a week, we found there were favourites amongst the service station chains that seemed more focused towards child travellers. It didn’t matter to us that the usual fresh baked country flapjack fair was replaced by international fast food chains. What did matter was that the children knew what to expect, liked what they saw, and found entertainment aimed at their various age levels to take their mind off the travelling for a while.

As a parent watching my children visibly relax, being able to take them to clean bathroom facilities (one of which was even decorated with fresh flowers), and know that when we restarted our journey they would be rested, fed and ready to go, the money it cost at each service station was worth it because of the amount of good relations it restored.

So if you’re travelling long distances with small children, watch out for the larger service stations such as Moto/Travel Lodge/Express. They may not serve the same menu as you’d get at say a Little Chef, but they will provide respite for travel weary kids. Besides, most of them can provide decent cup of coffee for you to take with you when you get back in the car!

Classic 80 films

I’m just sat down and watched Ferris Beulers day off, and this has just given me a real noestalager for 80’s films. they just don’t make them like that any more.

For example Wired Science, watch that film again. It is really quite racey, if it wasn’t for the point that it is just a little too far fetched to make sense, I swear it would have been banned.

Or Bill and Ted’s Excellent adventures, just hearing the name bring a smile to my face they were joyiously fun loving. Ow I missed thoughs days!

Because of everything that’s happening with the credit crunch, we have begun to take a lot of the work that usually get designated to alternative offices and now begin finishing these here at home-base. Personally, I suppose you could call this a false economy but mine is not to reason why. However, this does mean that I’m going to have to start again, and remake the public relations agency and omnilux Stockport sections without the knowledge from someone who can actually program! Damn them, damn them to hell! As if things weren’t bad enough, I had to arrange a new booking for my IPL treatment. Most of the time, there wouldn’t be an issue getting time off.

Budget 2008 Makes an Entrance

Well the Spring Budget has arrived and as ever the smokers and drinkers are hard hit, this year the spirit drinkers have been especially hit hard with a 55p increase per bottle. Cigarettes are increasing by a not-too-shabby 11p a packet (making quite a dent in your finances if you smoke a packet or more each day). The 14p a bottle increase on wine surprised almost as much as the increase in family allowance coming a year earlier than was anticipated.

I’d love for someone to explain to me why there’s such a huge difference between the heating allowance afforded to those aged over 60 (increasing to £250), and those over 80 years (increasing to £400). Do houses get more expensive to heat the older you get? Or is it simply that many people aged 80 and over are in some form of institution and therefore their heating allowance from the government helps the overall financial picture of such places?

The Misery of Stomach Bugs

It’s been one of those weeks. What is it with these stomach bugs? Why do they have to be so strong and knock out the entire family one by one? Why is there nothing yet in our modern medicine defenses that can take one of these bugs and pummel into the ground before it strikes an entire household?

It started off last week with the youngest member of the family. He probably caught it the same way all small kids do – sharing who-knows-what with his friends at school whilst on this treasure hunt they all went on together! The bug took him out of school for a few days, and then we returned to some semblance of normality (once all the additional laundry that this bug created was taken care of) for all of two days before it was my turn. Within a day my partner was also down with it – we probably caught it from our adored youngest child, one of us from cleaning him up, and the other from cleaning his bedding and clothes! We were just pulling ourselves together and enjoying the first decent night’s sleep without stomach cramps in a few days when we heard it strike our firstborn. Not as heroic, or independent, as his younger brother, the bug turned firstborn into a drama queen for 24 hours until it ran out of steam – or became bored with our son’s desperate attempts to convince us he was dying from this bug that had already passed through the rest of us without permanent damage.

Today everyone is more or less healthy again, and as there’s no more humans in the house, hopefully the stomach bug will have packed its bags and left to make another home a misery for a week or so. Unless of course it realizes that it missed the cat and comes back to create a little bit more worry and mess!

Kevin Keegan Flies Back to Magpie Nest

So Kevin Keegan’s taking over as Newcastle United Football Club in a return to the footie club that needs the “it” factor that he brings to it. Newcastle loves “Wor Kev”. Sure Alan Shearer is a contender for management, he’s surely earned his right to wear a manager’s shirt rather than a player’s shirt, but he’s still a rookie and untested in the management field for a major club. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens next – Shearer is being quoted in the media as being amicable to working alongside Kevin Keegan, if Keegan were to ask him, but politics would suggest that this may be a recipe for disaster with Shearer’s younger opinions getting in the way of Keegan’s more management experienced demands.

If there was a way that these two could work things however and work together to build the team, then the support that the area, and of course the enthusiastic “Toon Army” fans, would be tremendous. The love affair that the local area had with both of these ex NUFC players is long standing, and it’s going to be interesting to see how this lifts the morale not only of the players, but also the city that loves its footie almost as much as its beer!

The NHS - a Happy 60th?

The NHS turns sixty this year and so the battle resumes for the political meddling that has become so common in Britain's cherished health service. While everyone in the country, myself included fully appreciates the system, there is something deeply unsatisfying about how the whole set up carries on.

Maybe it is the fallacy of the trust system, the post code lottery that has now passed into everyday lexicon. Or maybe it is the queues in the Casualty departments up and down the country, especially now that winter is upon us. Or maybe its to due with lack of funds for cancer research, whilst the BACD crys for changes in legislation go unheard. Or maybe it is the fact that avoidable diseases are still prevalent due to simple procedures in hygiene not being followed.

There is also something in the amount of money that every taxpayer stumps up in terms of National Insurance, something that was increased a few years ago yet there has been no real improvements that have been visible to the voting public.
