For Christmas last year I was nagging my mum and dad to get me the latest Playstation or Xbox, and I was dying for the day to come when I could rip open the wrapping paper and start playing. If I didn’t let them know want I wanted, I would end up with a load of toasters instead!
I had been on at them for months previous to make sure they didn’t forget and they kept hinting that I was certainly going to get one. A couple of my mates from college had gotten one for their birthdays in the summer and I was so jealous. I was round there every day playing it until they got sick of me and kicked me out. I knew it would be awesome as you can get these headsets that you plug in to the console and you can chat to your friends whilst playing the same game together!

So when Christmas day came I snuck down stairs at god knows what time in the morning to try and get a peek at my new games console, I was so excited I couldn’t wait any longer. When I got to the tree I started hunting around for my presents, looking at the names on all the tags. I could not find anything that remotely resembled a games console. I thought it was strange but convinced myself that my parents must have hidden it somewhere as they would have expected me to try and find it.

I went back to bed but could hardly sleep, I woke up to my mum calling me for breakfast, I flew downstairs, shouting, ‘when can I open my presents’. She told me to stop acting like a little boy or I wouldn’t get anything. That shut me up!

Yes, as bizarre as the headline sounds, it’s not joke, it turns out that teenage boy all over America are doing this thing called boofing, butt-chugging or vodka-tamponing. As we all know it is only a matter of time before this crazy trend hits our shore, so to be forwarded is to be prepared.

Basically this trend is a way to get completely drunk as a sunk in literally no time at all. Your average tampon holds around 3 ounces of fluid, so that may not sound like a lot of alcohol, but when you consider where it is being inserted, it is big deal. Yes the vodka soaked tampons are being inserted into their rectums. Of course if girls catch on they do have two options and both will have the same effect.

Why is this extremely dangerous? Because when you drink alcohol normally it has to go through your liver before its hits your bloodstream. But when it is absorbed by either the rectum or vagina the rate at which the body absorbs it is much faster, which is why these kids are getting drunk as skunks in no time at all.

The liver does an important job when consuming alcohol; it filters it, therefore it reduces the chance of toxicity and the chance of alcohol poisoning, which cannot be said when it is absorbed by either of the fore mentioned areas. Why more Bourne films?

You might meet someone who loves the Bourne films as much as me, but it’s unlikely. For the following reasons: I have seen them more times than most people, I love them more than most people and this is quantified by the fact that I know every line of every film, and…well, we could be here all day, really.

Now, much as I love the Jason Bourne adventures – I’d say that Identity is my favourite, which is the first one, but you knew that, right? – I wouldn’t want them to be remade any time in the future. And just as I wouldn’t want that, I really can’t see the point in new films, with or without Matt Damon. The films were designed to work as a trilogy, and that’s the way it ought to stay. Yes there are more Bourne books, but books and movies are very different entities. You don’t want to get confused between the two, my friend!

If you’ve been paying attention to the movie-news-world in recent months then you will have heard that the people who made the original Bourne films are going to make MORE Bourne films. Yes, you heard right…only don’t be expecting Damon to reprise his role as the amnesiac secret agent. He and Paul Greengrass – who directed the last 2 – have both said they want nothing to do with the new series which will feature Jeremy Renner as Jason Bourne.

One thing I should probably say at this point is that I loved Jeremy Renner in The Town – Ben Affleck’s hard-hitting tale of grimy bank robberies and close friendships. Does that mean I think he should step up to this role? No. Even if he does it really well, he’ll never be able to take the place of Matt Damon, in my opinion.

Of course, just as Ian from it support services london said to me over the phone yesterday afternoon, it may be that he reinvents the series and makes it all his own. It may be that he stamps his mark on the series and makes us all think twice.

Only time will tell if this idea turns out to be a total disaster or a genius move on the part of the producers. My hope is that however it turns out it is different enough that it separates itself from the first 3 films. If it does that then at least there’s a clean slate to work with and the possibility of something bold and new and fresh.

Movie review: Blue Valentine

For some reason, in this time of anything-is-possible film-making, films which test the borders of where one genre ends and another begins are few and far between. Why is this? Well, it’s likely thanks to the same thread that has forever run through the industry: don’t stray too far from the path, because when it comes down to it, making films is largely about the money.

Which is why this film – starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as they discover one another intimately before our eyes, in a relationship that spans its infancy to its eventual estrangement – is so noteworthy. In a sea of action-thrillers and romantic comedies, BV doesn’t try to fit any one genre. Instead, it is part gritty drama, and part low-fi thriller. All this is wrapped up in a decidedly uncommon package which is filmed invisibly, so that all the time we feel like a bystander who’s been granted permission to witness all the events from the outset.

And don’t be fooled: yes, this is a film about the blurry line between domestic abuse and deep, meaningful love, but it is a film worth watching. Depressing as some parts might be, it remains an ultimately tender and surprising piece that will live on well into the future.

(More importantly, it was the perfect change of scene I needed yesterday evening when my computer ended up freezing on www.discountdisplays-express.co.uk. It might be a distraction which requires guts to sit through, but you’ll be rewarded with a number of questions which are both poignant and heart-breaking.)
